    blatant in its treatment of gender. In the novel, the men are portrayed in a very direct, very strong manner, whereas the women are stereotypical damsels who generally need help  and are rarely very intelligent. In fact, the intelligence is reserved for the male characters and while some might say that this is true of many works as authors are  only human and tend to embrace stereotypes, the time and place really does affect the outcome. Indeed, Chinese culture and its embrace of the male/female paradigm looms large. The work  begins with the Goddess Nugua and one can see that from the outset, women are portrayed as angelic and endowed with certain favorable qualities . Tsao et al. (1958)  relays the Chinese classic called The Dream of the Red Chamber in a way that highlights the soft, innocent qualities of the female, while showing that males are a bit  rougher. The work goes on and one sees a male character by the name of Shih-yin. And while he is perhaps not the quintessential male hero in a typical  novel, this male is decidedly more intelligent. Essentially, in this Chinese novel, one sees evidence of both social and gender stratification. The men have very similar qualities to one another  and the women also share similar features but may be split between two prototypes as will be discussed. There is no doubt as to the evidence that one will find  in Chinese society of gender differences and the author is clear in making note of this. At the same time, there are nuances in each character where traits are demonstrated  quite readily. One also cannot negate the fact that sexuality plays an important point in this love story.
