who immigrated to the United States the reasons were not so much the desire for a better way of life, or a change of culture, but for safety and possibly  a realization of a way of life that no longer existed in their own homelands. Many people believe that the immigration of the Arab to American shores is a  recent development, but in fact most accounts show that Arabs were coming to the United States as early as the fifteenth century along with the Spanish explorers(Naff, 1993). Ships manifests  verify their ethnic origin. The 1700s also saw Arabs coming from Northern Africa into parts of the Carolinas. This is known because of courthouse records of the minutes of the  congress who had to determine whether Arabs were to be considered colored persons, or white. By the 1800s those of Arabic descent were numerous enough to have their own language  newspaper, churches, and mosques. By 1924 some estimates list nearly two hundred thousand Arab immigrants living in the United States(Naff, 1993). During the 1900s the United States experienced a  tremendous surge in immigration, so much so, that now this period in history is termed The Great Migration. Most sources state that a great deal of the Arab immigrants during  this period of time came from Syria, which includes those territories that we know better today as Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon(Naff, 1993).Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, and Egypt immigrants also made their  way into America, but in smaller numbers, most reports state. For the most part, when the first Arab immigrants arrived, they tended to settle in the larger cities  such as New York or Chicago, but a distinguishing feature of the Arab immigrant was that during the early part of the 1900s the Arab immigrant could be found in
