a particular way, the way that the development, or learning takes place is a key factor in the way the job will be undertaken. By understanding the different theories of  learning, the trainer is able to look at getting the most from their students, motivation them and training in such as way that the training will have a long lasting  impact. For example, training may be undertaken using reinforcement methods, such as punishment for the wrong behaviour may solicit the correct results, but the long term impact may be negative  and the solicited response may be lost. However, the use of theories such as cybernetic and information theories, cognitive theories and experimental learning all engender longer term behavioural changed  and knowledge retention (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 1996) Individuals that are trained will all be different and as such will learn at different rates and benefit from a range of learning  tools, therefore, a trainer who is able to understand the learning process may also understand the way in which their student will learn and design the training programme in such  a manner as to engage and student. One example may also be seen in the work of Steven Corey who under took  "action research", it was this research that has formed the basis of the Learning Style Inventory (Corey, 1954, quoted in Bell, 1998). He divided the students into three groups; visual,  auditory and tactile learners. The research went on to assess the final result of the different types of students, there was a significant difference, visual learners gained the highest grades  than both tactile and auditory. The lesson to be gained from this research must be there will be a split of the different types of pupil in a class of
