    of running the operation. This includes making controversial decisions. Before embarking on the role of manager, the role of television as an entity should be briefly noted. Of all major  inventions of the twentieth century, few have had a greater impact on peoples lives than that of radio and television (Foner & Garraty, 1991). By 1933, two-thirds of American homes  had a radio, which outnumbered homes with telephones (1991). Forty-five years after that, 97 percent of all homes had one or more television sets (1991). Yet, what is perhaps the  most important part of the introduction of broadcast media is the impact it has had on American society as it essentially shapes the nations political climate, economy, and culture  (1991). Along with the ability of being able to shape the countrys moods and ideas, a responsibility comes. Much of that responsibility falls on the station managers shoulders. One area  of concern has to do with censorship. Generally, network stations do not permit the appearance of certain subject matter on the air but as the society changes, restrictions have changed  too. Some of these are legal and others have to do with individual management decisions. For instance, years ago a woman was not allowed to appear wearing under garments so  commercials featured models wearing bras over shirts. Things have changed drastically since those days. Station manager George Hulcher said regarding nudity featured on NYPD Blue,"The kind of product they showed  us was not for broadcast television. Its for cable" (Zoglin, Cole & Tynan, 1993, p. 81). Jan McDaniel, general manager of Wichitas KAKE, refused to air the controversial episode  after she received a great deal of letters and phone calls from the public in opposition (1993).
