    billion stadium that will be used for the Jets (Williams, 2005) . The stadium is also the "centerpiece" in respect to New York Citys plan to gain the 2012  Olympic Games (2005). Ads regarding the support of the stadium suggest that the stadium is not necessary for the Olympic decision and that if in fact New York would be  awarded the 2012 game, it would go ahead and build. In other words, gaining the Olympics is not contingent on building the stadium. The "build it and they will come"  mentality could prove costly for the city. Still, the mentality of New York has always been to embrace sports. Yankee Stadium is one example of an icon that defines New  York City. DeCandido (2001) remarks: "From Tammany Hall to Mayor Rudy, those who owned and/or governed New York have been intimately involved with Yankee Stadium" (1442). Therefore, some people do  not believe it is a bad idea to build another stadium that might become adored just as much. II. Background There are certainly both positive and negative  ramifications that a new stadium will have on the city. The positive aspects are that it would make New York a good candidate for future Olympics, something that would bring  the city more money. Again, it is not necessary, but certainly enhances the citys resume. Another good reason to build it is that it would generate more money and a  stadium is something that is sorely needed for the team. Finally, it would provide a positive image for New York, particularly since it was temporarily devastated on September 11, 2001.  In some way, by building, it shows the world that New York City is still vital and viable and will be a leader in the twenty-first century.
