With more and more companies downsizing, many employees are grateful that they even have a job, but they still complain about the circumstances.  They might have been making a great deal more money until overtime was cut and they complain about truncated benefits that perhaps the unions were not able to better negotiate.  In todays economy, there is a great deal of discussion on the responsibility of the employer to its employees. Many questions loom large. A student asks: "Do employers have a  duty or obligation within the employer-employee contract to provide job security and equal opportunities for employment to their workers?" First, it should be noted that by and large, most employees  are not contracted workers and they can be fired at will. This means that the only obligation the employer legally has is to pay an individual for services rendered. This  does not mean that an employer has the obligation to employ an individual a certain number of years nor provide opportunity for growth. Although many disgruntled employees are hired with  great expectations, the future is unpredictable and what was once necessary at the outset is not longer the case. For example, many people begin at a firm hoping to climb  the corporate ladder, only to find that middle management has been squeezed out of jobs. With fewer managerial positions in these firms, people are either out of work, or underemployed.  They have no where to go. From the position of the employer, the only obligation to the employee is again, to pay them a fair wage. Of course, employers who  discriminate against employees are breaking the law. Employers can of course hire and fire people who they believe will have the greatest impact on their corporation. However, they must abide
