The problem is analyzed and a proposal is made regarding what the company should do to  regain the trust of the consumer. Emphasized is the idea that Wal-Mart should hire more competent people and provide better training. I. Introduction Wal-Mart was an  American phenomenon, but it did not develop without controversy. Several things occurred in the course of the life of this chain store in its approximate thirty years of existence. One  problem is that over time, the chain has driven mom and pop stores out of business. Because the entrepreneurial spirit is embraced in America, and corporations are sometimes frowned upon,  not everyone likes when Wal-Mart breaks ground in their communities. In fact, there have been petitions against Wal-Mart opening in certain regions due to the competition factor. Few small retail  stores can compete with what this store has to offer. The industry giant has also been criticized for being anti-union. This is true, but Wal-Mart does not claim to be  a bad employer even though they do have employees who earn low wages. What many people do not realize is that although many workers start out with low hourly wages,  they do reap exceptional benefits from the retail store. Rather than relying on unions, many Wal-Mart employees had been motivated by its founder before his death. Sam Walton explains the  success of his enterprise and the people who run it as follows: "If people believe in themselves, its truly amazing what they can accomplish" (qtd. in Huey, Smith & Morrow,  1989, p. 52). The results of his attitude are seen in his stores every day. However, in 1993, Wal-Mart suffered a blow. A television news report featured child laborers
