McNeill's book, The Pursuit of Power: Technology, Armed Force and Society Since A.D. 1000, McNeill contends that European military power after the year 1000 A.D. is an aberration. One of McNeill's basic premises put forth in this volume is that this aberration separates the development of military power after 1000 A.D. from the development of warfare and the structure of military organizations prior to this date.
