    stories about sons and daughters rebelling against parents, sometimes with disastrous results. Jacob, for example, robbed his brothers birthright from his father, Isaac, by a trick. Cain, of course, murdered  his brother Abel, in direct defiance to his parents. Then there was the story of Absaloms uprising against his father, King David, in the book of Samuel. David, throughout his  reign, was constantly at odds with all of his offspring. It was Absalom, however, who provided the most trouble for the ancient Israelite monarch, and the one whom David mourned  the most once Absalom was finally defeated. This paper is about Absalom and his attempts to wrest the throne from his father.  The paper will demonstrate a few things; namely, that such battles were common during the time in which Israel and Judah were actually two separate nations, that Absalom believed he  was in the right in battling his father because of his fathers contempt for Israel, and that the death of Absalom, while justified in Davids mind, caused him a great  deal of grief and anguish. Absalom in the Book of Samuel Before analyzing the roles of both Absalom and David, it is  helpful to examine how the Bible portrays both of these men. The story of Absalom is covered in the second book of Samuel, and begins with a tale of incest.  Amnon, Davids son, falls in love with Tamar, who is Absaloms sister and also the son of David (Book of Samuel). As an aside, the Bible makes references to kinship  based on brothers and sisters rather than fathers; in Davids time, he had children from many women. Meanwhile, Amnon tricked Tamar and
