opening scene of this disturbing play. THE ROOM This play takes place all in one room. We learn through some of the conversation that takes place that it  is a rather large boarding house with a basement and at least one more room above the ground level room in which the play takes place. Most of the  dialogue at the beginning is from Rose, a woman aged in her sixties who lives with a man named Bert. They are not man and wife and it is  never explained what their relationship to each other is, although Rose has been with Bert some time as she makes mention of the fact that "I look after you good,  dont I Bert?" Rose tends to hover over Bert, who needs to go out later, apparently to make a delivery in his van, although that is conjecture. Rose looks  outside and lets him know the roads are icy and that he must be careful. Because Rose fixes him a nice meal of bacon and eggs and herself a  simple cup of tea we know that she regards Bert as more important as herself. Bert never says anything, just allows Rose to continue to look after him and  do things for him. He does not thank her for any of the things she does for him, implying that Rose is expected to wait on him and take  care of him. It is chilly outside, and because Rose draws her cardigan around her the audience sees that it is chilly inside as well. But the chill is  not from the cold weather alone. The chill is as much between Bert and Rose as it is due to any cold weather. One suspects there is not
