law officers could handle almost anything from an assault on a person to the stealing of a persons property. In this day  and age, however, security has taken on a meaning that is more that simply physical. Everything, it seems, needs to be guarded, from personal possessions to personal privacy. As societys  perception of the meaning of security and the need for security has changed, so has the nature of the security industry. The  purpose of this paper is to examine an overview of the concept of security, and then analyze various writings that cover this topic. Also included in this paper will be  examples from a previous paper written about public/private security in Great Britain entitled Private Policing in Great Britain. Although the latter paper focuses mainly on Britain, it still provides an  interesting overview of how societys perceptions of security have helped change the nature of the industry. An overview of securitys meaning There  are basically two types of security or "policing;" public policing, which is handled by the government at either the state, local or regional level and private policing, which is protection  paid directly from an individual or a group of individuals to a private company or individual, which then provides either manpower, security technology, or both to protect the individuals and/or  corporations that paid (, 2002). Private policing, however, involves more than individuals guarding persons or property: according to writer Tim Newburn, the private security sector can include everything  from alarms and security equipment to security consultants and in-house security (Newburn, 2001). The growth of technology has had a huge impact on the security field as well (Newburn, 2001).
