    IT related equipment used internally in the production of computing equipment. The performance of the company is impacted by a range of factors, these can be considered in terms  of different frameworks. The PESTEL model looks at political, economic social technological, environmental and legal environment. The political environment has been very changeable. The events of September the 11th  2001 and the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre proved the need a range of back up systems, and in the US there was a recognised need for good  quality products. However, the largest opportunities may be seen as presented as a result of the political climate in China. This country has now joined the world trade organisation and  is opening up for trade. There is a great potential in this area, and as Intel already have a strong present in a market that is still at the early  growth stage the company is well placed. Economic conditions have been harsh, the slow down the world economy has meant that many IT purchases have been postponed and equipment  is being made to last longer. This has resulted in a fall in revenues of 21% for the year 2001 to $26.54 billion, Net income fell by 88% to  $1.29 billion (Wall Street Journal, 2003). Social pressures are also leading to a higher demand and level of acceptance of technology. Many friendships are conducted using the internet though  computers, shopping and information searches are also seen as more acceptable in the west. The advent of computers has changed the way lives are led, and are likely to continue  to do so. However, this uptake has also meant that the market has matured in the west, meaning there are lower levels of purchases and most are not replacement. Social
