Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., March 2001 Introduction The creative imagination is like a genie that  has escaped its bottle; once it is released, it will do any and everything to stay alive, even to the point of fantasy and self -destruction. Charlotte Perkins Gilmans  short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" illustrates that creative imagination cannot be stopped by oppression. Rather eventually it even learns to "creep" around the room just to stay free, at  the expense of the body that contains it. The Beginnings of doubt Our narrator has such an imagination - once it must have delighted her husband. But now he  has decided it is the cause of illness, rather than the post-partum depression we might label it today. The narrators personal creative expression has served her well in the  past, yet now she is told that it no longer serves her well, and she must eliminate it from her life. The narrator doubts that this is a wise  call on the point of her physician-husband (Brooks ppg) The narrator tells us: "John is a physician, and perhaps--(I would not say it to a living soul, of course,  but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)--perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster." ... My brother is also  a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing. So I take phosphates or phosphites--whichever it is, and tonics, and
