    Ws of journalism - who, what, when, why and where - are basics of every journalistic effort that students are taught right away. These five questions must be answered  within the body of the news piece, and in a way that makes their answers obvious to the reader. The "when" and "where" aspects of the five Ws refer  to more than only time and place for some event, however. Time Time references can give the reader information, such as when an  event is scheduled, but it also provides context for the current article or broadcast. Most news items do not exist in a vacuum, but rather evolve over time.  The reader, or hearer in the case of broadcast journalism, needs to be able to categorize events in his own mind, and giving reference to time assists in that effort.  As example, there were many reports surrounding the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. News media relayed the reports as the information  became available, but in some way the information that was coming to light needed to be categorized and placed in some kind of chronology. Which plane crashed first?  Would the crash in Pennsylvania be shown to be connected to the attacks, or was it the result of something totally unrelated to the attacks that had exploded the upper  floors of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center? As reporters began sifting through the tidbits of information that were flying at them, they themselves needed to fit  the items into a rough chronology so that they could write or speak about them correctly and in their proper context.
