Churchill has been one of the leading British playwrights of  the 20th century and in the world of Top Girls, she makes it clear that there are few easy rewards for women, even those who adhere to the strict constraints  placed on their lives. The same might be said about many if not most of the women who walk through the doors of "Top Girls," the employment agency where the  main character works and has struggled to "get ahead." Interestingly, Churchills dramas are never thought of as "easy" which is, far too often, a predictor of popularity. Top Girls takes  place in London of the 1980s and examines the price tag that is attached to success as demonstrated by one womans (Marlenes) climb up the corporate ladder. The play was  written in 1982 and, a time when women were determined to break through the "glass ceilings" of the business world and demonstrate their remarkable competency. Not surprisingly, it is  often branded as being a "feminist" play but aside from that, it is also a truthful depiction of the choice women are forced to make in their lives regarding who  and what they will ultimately become as individuals. "Top" Women of History The characters Churchill presents in the first act of the play are each representations of women who were  extremely successful human beings in a broad measure of the interpretation of such a term. Each comes from a different place and time, sometime in the past 1200 years.
