    explains the political structure of communist regimes. According to this model, communist political systems are ruled by one party; one supreme leader exercises unquestioned authority over the party and the  state; political power is highly centralized; and the party-state leadership does not permit society any rights or any freedoms" (Customer, 2002). The Research Question  The hypothesis here is that "this model is still relevant to China, and it was true of other communist countries right up to the collapse of communist rule" (Customer,  2002). The independent variable is the year that communism fell in subject nations; the dependent variable is the year that alternative - i.e., non-communist - political parties openly appeared.  Three countries will be examined to assess the veracity of the hypothesis. These nations are Poland, Russia and China. Communism fell  in Poland in 1989; it fell in Russia in December 1991. It still is in force in China, though in a form that is greatly modified from that which  existed a generation ago. Expectations and Evidence If the evidence is going to be found to support the hypothesis, then several conditions should  be found in existence in each. These conditions include: * Domination by a single political party; * Consistent deference to one supreme leader; * Highly centralized national government; and  * Absence of any rights for individuals. Single Party System In each of the countries of focus, the communist party was the  controlling factor in all national, regional and local issues. Internal control on the local level was overseen by individuals placed in office by the national party. They performed
