an outrageous attack on our freedom and security. The events of September 11 left this country shaken and allowed fear into the consciousness of Americans. There is relatively  no facet of society untouched by this event, and travel and tourism are no exception. Because of the terrorist attacks and subsequent shaken confidence of the American people, travel  and tourism have suffered greatly in this country as well as abroad. The Effects of September 11, 2001 on Tourism The tourism industry  has, without question, been negatively effected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The aviation industry is just one aspect of the entire tourism industry which has been  negatively effected but it is one of the most significant: The September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States have had economic repercussions in many sectors, but the impact  on the international tourism and aviation industries has been especially profound and has already resulted in hundreds of thousands of layoffs, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). The  crisis in civil aviation is expected to cost some 200,000 jobs, and the broader impact on global tourism could threaten up to nine million jobs worldwide, according to an ILO  report released October 25 (Lubetkin, 2002). And yet, the way the airline industry has rallied in the face of this disaster has indeed been impressive (Lubetkin, 2002). Although  revenues continue to be down since the attacks, there has been a marked increase in airline travel since the disaster - reaching higher than anticipated levels (Lubetkin, 2002).  Although the terrorists targeted the United States with the attacks of September 11, 2001, the entire world felt the aftershocks (Tourism Recovery Committee for the Mediterranean Region, 2002).
