the downhill slopes, who took a seat at the ice skating rink, or who applauded as they watched their favorites swoosh past them in the Luge, did more than bring  support to their fellow countrymen and women. They brought their pocketbooks, and they created a lasting effect on the city of Salt Lake City.  It can be stated that those who travel into an area for a large event, such as the Super bowl or the Olympics bring a lot of  tourist dollars with them. But is it enough to offset the costs of getting ready for the games? How about the tax dollars that the hosting town has to fork  over and which may never be realized in returns on investments in buildings and venues that once the event has passed, will more than likely not be utilized again?  Statistics from several past host countries show that prior to the Olympics starting, and during the Olympic year, the Gross Domestic Product yields  are higher than they normally would be, and are lower than average after the games(Economic Impact, 2002). What this would seem to mean, then, is that while everyone has work,  which has been generated by the various Olympic venues, there is more money in the economy and all seems well. However, this is just a false high as after the  events, the construction jobs, the jobs at the hotels and other tourist related spots, drop exponentially, which impacts the economy sometimes, it could be said, in devastating ways.  According to the 1998 World Cup statistics, there could very well be a host city effect, which is temporary in nature.
