    Australian Web Sites. TUTORIAL: This paper will address why leadership is necessary for business success. This can be approached in different ways, such as discussing examples of successful businesses and  the leadership and management approaches utilized in the company. In this model paper, we will describe effective leadership and reference the need for effective leadership in business success.] Bill  Bennett said: "Leadership is a nebulous concept. We all recognise what it is when we see it and we can sense where its missing" (2000). But, it is incredibly difficult  to define leadership. Many authors, scholars, theorists and practitioners have tried to define what it is and typically provide descriptions of things that effective leaders do. Gordon Lippitt, who is  at George Brown University in Canada is one of the many who has studied leadership for decades (Bennett, 2000). Lippitt finally concluded that: "Leadership is the worst defined, least understood  personal attribute sometimes possessed by human being" (Bennett, 2000). People who read a great deal about leadership know that this is a conclusion most theorists have reached. Leadership is an  elusive quality that some people seem to have innately and others work hard to develop. One thing that is known is that a business will not succeed without a  good leader at the helm and without good leaders and managers throughout the company. Aventis, a large international recruiting agency strongly asserts: "Business success demands effective leadership" (2002). Theorists  have provided lists of characteristics, skills and traits that effective leaders possess: * Vision: The leader has a mental picture of a goal that represents the future for the business  (Bennett, 2000). Employees tend to believe their leader is a visionary when there is a large gap between the status quo and the goal (Bennett, 2000). * Conviction: Effective leaders
