to speak to make sure that everything is copasetic. It is commonly referred to as the system of checks and balances. Each branch performs a certain function. The executive branch,  which is led by the president, has a multitude of powers; the President is the commander in chief, and he or she also has the power of veto. Congress can  make law, and while subject to the power of the presidents veto, can supersede that with a two-thirds vote. The judicial branch makes rulings on cases, and so case law  becomes a part of the legal model, sometimes negating congressional laws. As one can see, the system creates a situation where the branches of government are inextricable. Obviously, each branch  is able to check the others and they share power to some extent. While the system had been set a long time ago, and is essentially the same, it  pays to look at the history to see how the government was formed. For example, when it first started, there was dissent. There were differences between the Hamilton Federalists and  the Jeffersonian Anti-Federalists for example, particularly in relation to the formation of this new U.S. Constitutional Government. Just as today, one political party supports a central government whereas the other  supports more rights for individual states, the same argument erupted when the country was just beginning. In broad terms, Anti-Federalists celebrated localism and were afraid of centralization of authority (Amar,  1993). At the same time, the federalists desired larger government, or at least a central body governing the country. Much of the argument went to individual states rights which  is juxtaposed to the idea that the central government would be the primary authority.
