    identify is another issue, and while it is not the antithesis of multiculturalism, the two concepts are certainly at odds. Does having distinct groups of people create a nation  of multiple identities or does the nation have a single identity? Controversy is often raised when issues of hyphenated Americans comes up. After all, some say, one should call  themselves Americans and not African-Americans or Asian-Americans. Yet others want to retain the identity associated with their ethnic, religious or racial origins. Which paradigm is correct? A student writing on  this subject might want to note that no one way is necessarily right. In fact, the two can co-exist. Americans can have a sense of nationalism as well as the  ability to retain their sense of identity. America is a melting pot, and people should be able to hang on to their roots, but they should recognize that national identity  is important too. Yet, in embracing this model, or any of the others, it is important to keep in mind that there are positive and negative features and some questions  arise. Are there dangers or benefits to a multicultural society and at what point does diversity become overly divisive ? In order to answer those questions and come up with  support for the answers to those perplexing queries, a student writing on this subject should look to the roots of the nation. The nation after all has its roots in  cultural diversity and while some families can trace their roots back hundreds of years, America is made of immigrants and those whose families have come to America during the twentieth  century are numerous. Looking at large cities in America demonstrates the scope of the inquiry. The cities are large and contain millions of immigrants, each with a different identity. An
