Through the ages then, the purpose of underwear has not been merely sanitation, hygiene, or  other utilitarian purpose, but just as importantly underwear has allowed people to reshape their bodies according to the fashion at that time. A perfect example is bras. Think  about the various types of bras and the various forms they have shaped breasts into over time. During the 1950s and 1960s, extreme cone shapes were popular and today  a smoother, rounder look is preferable. Bras and undergarments help people achieve the look they desire. Fashions come and go and with them come various undergarment designs. It  is human nature for people to want to look good and to look like others are trying to look. In this way, manufacturers of undergarments have tried to comply.  Girdles offer another example of manufacturers supplying what people want in order to reshape their bodies. For years women  have stuffed themselves into rubber and Lycra in an attempt to rid themselves of bumps and bulges and to give their bodies a smoother line underneath the clothes which they  wear. There is obviously no physical reason why anyone needs to wear a girdle so the point of the girdle then, is for the woman to try and reshape  her body. Namely, to thin it out so that it appears thinner in clothes thereby making the woman more confident about her appearance.
