    is recognized in a workplace there may be fears or concerns on the part of the employer, the presence of a union helps to empower workers through collective power. The  benefit or disadvantage to the employer depends on the model of collectivism that is adopted. The traditional approach has been one of conflict, where it is assumed that the employers  and the employees have differing conflicting interests. However this is not the only model of collectivism, although it is one of the most  A useful model that can be utilized to demonstrate the way in which this new collective co-operative may be seen to occur can be gained from Storey and Bacon  (1993). This can be seen to clearly demonstrate that there are many aspects to collectivism other than pay bargaining. This model divides the employment relationship into three different areas, and  recognized the way in which there may be an interaction between them all by way of 8 different models of interaction with different levels of collectivism and individualism incorporated, only  one has a fully individualism approach, indicating the need and presence of collectivism in some for in most employment relationship. Most of are a combination of both approaches in different  formats (Storey and Bacon, 1993). When considered inline with different models there may be benefits to the presence of unions, the ability  to undertake collective bargaining may be seen as a way of ensuring that every worker is equal and can reduce the amount of time and effort taken with individual pay  bargaining. The ability of the union to flex muscle and try and force settlements regarding any dispute may be problematic. Conversely, at the same time the collective power of the
