will be different from anyone else who contrives to tell the tale. This is part of the use of language by an author. The other influence on voice, it can
be said, is the authors life, itself. What has he or she experienced in his/her lifetime that has contributed to this unique perception and turn of phrase? In the life
and works of Sandra Cisnero, this unique perception is most prevalent in her use and knowledge of her culture, the environment and perhaps an innate understanding of the human condition.
Perhaps better known for her novel, The House on Mango Street, Cisnero has been able to capture the experience of a
child growing up in poverty with such clarity of vision so that even the reader who has never been inside of a poor neighborhood is able to understand some of
the juxtaposition of misery and joy which exists there, and inside the people, as well. Esperanza is the title character in
House on Mango Street and is told from her perspective in a series of vignettes. What is particularly unique about Cisneros style in this book is that each chapter tells
the reader what Esperanza is thinking and feeling at the most important moments in her life, but other than that exact moment, there is very little detail given about the
character. This gives the work a touch of authenticity. In fact, the exact age of the character is never directly stated. This capsulization of Esperanzas life lends an air of
immediacy to what happens to Esperanza that may, one could say, fail to exist if the writer simply told the story in a day to day type of format.
