In undertaking a brief LONGPEST analysis, looking at the political, economic, social and technological issues on a local, national and global  basis the real potion may be better assessed. Locally airports may be seen as a boon and a bane. There existence alone may be seen as political issues. The  current situation is one where airports such as Stansted are being targeted for expansion. The decision which lead to the decision of which airports to extend air political, and the  resistance may be social but will also follow the political framework, as seen with the resistant to building of terminal five at Heathrow (The New Statesman, 2001). Here the government  overruled the local resistance and stated that building the ?2.5 billion terminal would go ahead in 2002 (The New Statesman, 2001). This was a local issue that cost over ?110  million and took four years to complete the enquiry occupying a total of thirty three barristers (The Economist, 2001). There are also  the political impacts that may be seen in terms of where and how flights take place. Public pressure has meant that any flights may have local regulations to deal with,  for example, at Stansted any flights that take off after eleven oclock at night will be subject to a substantial fine. Economically there are heavy impacts locally. The airline  industry and the presence of airports creates a number of jobs associated with the local workforce. The increased employments brings jobs, however, the associated drop in the prices of houses  located on the flight paths also has a negative impact on the locality. The economic factors locally may also determine the way in which pay rates are offered, however, these
