The United Nations is one of the most powerful political entities on the face of the earth. The United Nations came into being immediately after  World War II and is still performing an important peace keeping role (Hammond). The United States has, of course, been an important force in shaping the ideologies and political  direction of this entity. While this entity is also influenced by countries such as France and Great Britain, the role played by the U.S. cannot be reproduced by any  other country. This role is critical, in fact, to maintaining the strength and influence of the U.N. It can be contended, in fact, that without the leadership of  the United States and the clout of U.S. military, the U.N.would be largely ineffective in terms of world hierarchy and politics. It is thus imperative that the U.S. maintain  our current level of involvement in the U.N. even in the face of the criticism which has been hurled in our direction practically since the development of this political body.  It can be contended as well that the contemporary political situation we are facing is far removed from the days when a country  could independently govern within its own boundaries in oblivion to what was occurring on a global basis. The present world situation, in fact, demands the existence of international alliances  as expressed in global governing institutions such as the United Nations. Such institutions are a necessary component of an overall world plan for peace. The United Nation serves,  in fact, as the most immediate example of a global governance institution which will retain its importance into the twenty-first century.
