The macro environment in which Upsher-Smith Laboratories operates is one that strives to be in transition and change, but one that in reality remains all too much
the same: costs continue to rise despite insurers and governments efforts to contain them. All of US health care is directly influenced by Medicare, which in essence provides
the framework that both drives and supports spiraling costs that seem to increase under their own power, despite anyones efforts to contain them. In every respect - economically, technologically,
demographically, socially and politically - Medicare exerts either direct or indirect control over all of US health care. As the first of the
baby boomers begin to retire, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 will be dramatically increasing over the next few years. Technological advances in medicine are
such that people are living longer, and when combined with the demographic changes now underway, the result is expected to greatly affect all of US health care even more in
the future than at present. Pharmaceutical companies are not on everyones list of favorite entities. The entire industry is maligned and mistrusted,
while at the same time valued for bringing such dramatic differences to so many individuals lives. Increasing profitability results from the combination of
