    They are the powerful. And, according to the book, Wealth and Power in America, they call all the shots. Rupert Murdoch is one of the  modern ages global giants in the area of publishing, owning a controlling share of News Corporation. He is one such example of those whose wealth buys them more than privilege.  It buys them power. BASIS OF POWER IN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT Murdoch, as the top media mogul in the United States, is regularly courted by  politicians. His power is derived from a combination of factors. First, he is able to control the media output since a great deal of the media outlets that are his,  are the most popular in the United States. Secondly, because he is so influential in the dissemination of information, he is very popular with the politicians who are always looking  to be portrayed in a good light by the media. The fact that Murdoch is one of the wealthiest Americans makes him a prime target for those politicians seeking reelection  support. Murdoch does not hail originally from America, though he has made his home in America for over a decade. Originally from Australia, he inherited  a medium sized newspaper business from his father. Using this as a springboard, he quickly grasped the power of the pen. His politics in Australia were, for the most part,  conservative. As such, then, he is able to influence who comes into power, who gains significant advantage monetarily in an election, and who gets the lions share of media coverage  and favorable photo ops.
