Industries of questionable relevance or individual companies with internal management problems blame everything external for their internal problems. This  point alone is sad because failure to recognize the real problems equates to failure to address them. Several of these companies and industries have been able to convince government  entities that their business sectors need protection in the most desperate manner. They never realize that the very protection they seek and are so relieved to find most likely  will be the "poison dart" that will seek to destroy them. Chiquita Brands is one of the latest to have been caught in this interminable web. Protectionism  The very idea of guarding an industry to "help" it survive seems - superficially at least - to be a reasonable approach to the pressures  created by international trade. It appears to be so sound that many regard it as being simple common sense, when in reality there is no "sense" about it.  Chiquitas drama is still playing; those of other industries have witnessed the final curtain and have revealed their final outcomes already.
