This book reveals some intense struggles within Kenyan society and portrays the lives of innocent children who get caught within these struggles. This book is very well written and offers  not only a glimpse at a historically significant event, but also offers a story which reflects the real hopes, dreams, and fears of the people of that time. This  novel, while short and easy to read, offers the reader the opportunity to really reflect on some significant issues in terms of race relations.  The author, Ngugi Wa Thiongo hails from Kenya and is a bilingual writer. He has written books in both English and his native Gikuyu. Thiongo has  many successful works to his credit and several plays as well. This author now writes mainly in his native language because he believes that in doing so, he will  help keep alive the culture and traditions of his people. Weep Not, Child is the story of Njoroge,  who is a young boy growing up in Kenya. He is growing up in the midst of the Mau Mau rebellion which took place between the Africans and the  British colonials who ruled that nation. The Mau Mau rebellion actually began in 1952 in highland Kenya, a British colony where whites had settled and there were many plantations.  They settled in this area due to the lush, rich, fertile land that was available and their ability to cultivate it. The  main complaint of the Kenyans was that Britain was reserving all the rich, fertile land for their own use leaving the natives with little land of their own to farm.
