    expected to behave. This may reflect an ideology of equality, or may be grounded in inequality. There have been many laws laid down, some dating back millennia, the oldest of  which is the Torah. However it is not the only ancient law, another is the Code of Hammurabi. The law here may be seen as forward looking, and depending on  perspective it may be seen as either a guarantee of human freedom or an ideology of social inequality. Hammurabi was a King in  ancient Babylon, his reign lasting between 1795-1750 BC (King, 2002). There are many relics from this time, but the law may be seen as one of the most notable survivals.  We know the details of the law as it was written down in cuneiform and preserved on pillar. In looking at the law today the rules may seen viscous and  barbaric, however to understand them and consider the ideals and social perspective they had in terms of the context of the time and not by todays values.  There was a definite idea of social equality in the way that the law was formulated. The idea of writing a law down so that  all could read it was unusual for civilisation of this time. The was an ability for the law to be seen in objective terms, the law applied to everyone, and  all had access to read the law so that they could understand their duties and the constraints as well as the penalty for breaking the constraints. Many serious crimes carried  the death sentence, but there is little to indicate that this was in a discriminatory sense. Death was prescribed for these crimes regardless of class or gender.
