Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., June 2001  Introduction Ava Johnson is the main character of Pearl Cleages 1997, first novel, What Looks Like Crazy on a Ordinary Day. Not only is the narrator of the tale,  but throughout the read and afterwards, she has become our "new best friend." This discussion will share some of "who Ava is" and her relationship with the other characters  in the novel. Characters Ava Johnson: From chapter one on, Ava, recently diagnosed as HIV positive, pulls no punches, either with us, or with herself: "people  keep asking me if I know who I got it from. Like all theyd have to do to ensure their safety is cross this specific guys name off their list  of acceptable sexual partners the same way you do when somebody starts smoking crack no future here. But I always tell them the truth I have no idea. Thats when  they frown and give me one last chance to redeem myself. If I dont know who, do I at least know how many?
