• Research Paper on:
What is a Case Study and What is Case Study Methodology?

    Number of Pages: 22

    Summary of the research paper:

This 22 page paper is written in 2 parts. The first part examines what a case study is. Starting with the explanation that it is a narrow qualitative research model the paper expands the definition and looks at the different definition of case study given by a range of researchers. This part of the paper considers what should and should not be in a case study and how they can be used as a research method as well as aids to student learning. The second part of the paper looks at what is meant by case study method, how case studies can and should be undertaken, the range of choices that are available to the researcher and how case study method has developed over time. The bibliography cites 14 sources.

describe an approach to quantitative research as proposed to quantitative research (Flyvbjerg, 2006). Instead of the use of large numbers of research subjects, or a large sample population were there  is the use of statistical analysis with the ability to measure limited variables, often with the use of closed questions and coding, case studies are based on the in-depth examination  of a single person, company, phenomenon or event. The subject of the study is singular which allows the study to be much narrower and much deeper view (Flyvbjerg, 2006).  A case study provides a systematic method of study of the singular party or event, with the data collection followed by an analysis and the presentation of the results. With  traditional quantitative research the larger sample gives the researcher a broad understanding, the use of the case study provides the opportunity to look into more detail, answering open questions and  apply the use of models that are not easily applied to statistical data to understand what is taking place and are particularly suited to research where there are many questions  (Flyvbjerg, 2006). Case studies may also be used to test hypothesis, however just as they can be used to test they are also  very able to generate new hypothesises which may be tested in the same research or lead to further future research (Flyvbjerg, 2006). Yin (2002) uses a slightly different definition  to case studies; he defines them as a research strategy, claiming it is best described as an approach that examines a phenomenon in the context of the real world. In  this definition there can be the use of multiple case studies or singular case studies that may utilise a range of data sources and can also benefit from previous research
