Earth, and before it is all over, it can be said that many more will. The Bounty Lands, by William Donohue Ellis, then, is the story of Thomas Woodbridge and
his quest for land of his own, and those who would deny him his right to it. Thomas Woodbridge has a problem. His father, Jonathan Woodbridge had entrusted his
son with a warrant for a tract of land in the Northwest Territory. This land was given to Jonathan by George Washington himself, for service to the country in the
Revolutionary War. Promised that the land would one day be worth a great deal, he charged his son with holding on to it until the prediction has come true. However,
to the young Thomas, his father and George Washington were crazy. This is evidenced by this quote from the book: "But in the impatient opinion of Thomas Woodbridge, who now
rode into Concord Center with a pocketful of paper, General Washington and private Jonathan Woodbridge had been wrong"(Ellis, 5). The hero in a sense adheres to a set of
personal codes (much like Hemingways did) which serve them in good stead when faced with insurmountable dangers. Along their journey (and there always is one) the hero is challenged both
physically and psychologically. However, there generally enters into the storyline a guide of some sort which is the archetype of the old man/old woman) who steers them along the right
path. Initially, then, all that Thomas wants is his land. In the novel form, however, and of course, it wouldnt be a story if there were no conflict. Thomas
