of diversity has taken a nose dive. While there are still a great number of people who still chant the multi-cultural mantras, the stark reality of the matter is, multiculturalism  is not an all inclusive term. In fact, women tend to be at a distinct disadvantage in respect to the practice of multiculturalism.  The whole theory behind the concept of multiculturalism is that the idea of difference and heterogeneity are excepted and tolerated for their differences. This sounds great on paper  and it plays well to the politicians in Washington, but what most have found out over the years is that in practical applications, it is a failure where gender is  concerned. In emphasizing the differences between the majority and minority cultures, multiculturalism focuses attention on those differences. Further, as diverse communities coexist within the state, multiculturalism raises the issue of  their equality. It asks whether the different entities, constituting the many, are granted an equal status within the polity. Susan Okin, in her  book, Is Multiculturalism Bad for Women?, states that embracing the differences may be well and good, but some of the culture which exist within the boundaries of the United States  support rigid and inhumane practices toward women. Celebrating diversity should not extend to an embracing of those ideologies, no matter where they come from, if it expressly goes against the  basic premises of the Constitution. "When we spot these sorts of ideologies, Okin argues that we ought to be less solicitous of the particular group and more attentive to the  costs to the female members"(Okin 1999). In fact, in regard to a good number of cultural traditions involving women, multiculturalism would be quite harmful, if not demeaning to women.
