A workplace that needs improvement - be it military or civilian - must be approached from the perspective of  bottom to top, rather than top to bottom, in relation to how workers are treated, how they perceive their company worth and the extent to which their individual contributions are  looked upon as both valuable and encouraged, all of which is established with solid, open communication. In order to establish this fundamental basis  of communication within the workplace, management has to abandon its supervisory egos in exchange for an atmosphere of openness, encouragement and teamwork. For the most part, the concept of  business communication -- when implemented correctly -- can be the difference between a productive organization and one that cares little about its workforce. When communication is at its full  potential, it can make the workplace a "model of teamwork" (Flynn, 1996, p. 16); however, if the arrangement is pushed upon people without competent leadership at the helm, communication can  ultimately do more harm than good. Generally realized when people are imparted with the ability to openly communicate with one another is how  they are now able to form a collective opinion with respect to problem solving, decision making and innovative ideas. It is a sad fact how too many managers and  supervisors fail to recognize the far-reaching benefits of open communication, choosing instead to rule with an autocratic influence. To say that an organization can flourish when there is no  sense of connectivity is to say that the organization has no firm foundation. Open communication not only increases the health index of a company, but it also protects it
