to still plague many minorities. It is to these issues that Lammings novels, Castle of My Skin, and S.Rushdies, Midnights Children, speaks. One of the immediate questions he seems
to address is how one learns discrimination toward something or someone? One way would be that racism and discrimination are taught and a child is brought up in a culture
that routinely considers these actions acceptable and desirous. Another possible way, one might argue, is a misplaced perception on the part of a majority, especially if the socio-economic differences are
great. For example, a wealthy person would look down upon the impoverished individual as if that person did something to deserve being poor. This is illustrated in Lammings novel, Castle
of My Skin, in the treatment of the white landlords of the black tenants. Also, this is indicated throughout the whole novel through the portrayal of colonization as it really
was. Most people who colonize, it can be said, think that they are doing the conquered people a favor. Needless to say, this is not the prevailing theme that Lamming
shows. "We were now in Belleville where the white people lived, and the streets bordered by palm trees were called avenues. Here the houses were all bungalows high and wide
with open galleries and porticoes. Bottles of milk were grouped on the steps, and occasionally light flickered from the kitchens where the servants were preparing early coffee. (Lamming, 109)
