    Use This Report Correctly, Please     Much of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia can be traced to the history of the country, and the way in which it has been subjected to a variety of  political, ethnic and economic pressures. In order to understand how these diverse elements have influenced the way in which Eastern European countries have developed, especially with regard to their relationship  with the Soviet bloc and with Western economies, it is  After the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian empire in the first world war, which had been initiated in part by  the conflict between Serbian national interests and Austro-Hungarian imperialism, the Balkan states (of which the region referred to as Yugoslavia was a part) were redefined. Yugoslavia was a composite which  incorporated Serbs, Croats and Slovenes - three different ethnic groups, but a country in which the Serbians formed the dominant culture.  The name Yugoslavia means the land of the southern  Slavs, and the extent to which the dominant culture predominated meant that there was a considerable degree of resentment amongst the minority groups: there were several anti-Serbian groups, and there
