    simple idea with the company providing a service without needing any goods to be held on stock, the software allows buyers to bid on products they want to purchase, and  ebay charges a fee for its services. If we wish to consider this company is greater detail we can undertake a SWOT analysis, this looks at the strengths and  weaknesses, of the company as well as the opportunities and threats which it faces. Strengths The company is a large company, with a global presence, a well  known brand name and a large number of registered users. The company began in September of 1995, and appears to be the first of its type to gain such as  large market share. Good marketing and the filling of a gap in the market gave eBay the ability to gain a first mover advantage in the Internet auction business. This  has lead to many sites across the globe, with sites in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain,  Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom (eBay, 2002). With this level of presence in the web, the company is able to deal in many countries by using the  consumers own language and currencies. This may be seen as one of the strengths that has lead the company to a position of 42.4 million registered users in 2000, and  the site being measured by Media Metrix as the most popular shopping site in terms of user minutes (eBay, 2002). The mission is also wide ranging facilitating many different  and unusual trades, they state that their mission is " to help practically anyone trade practically anything on earth." (eBay, 2002).
