    become so successful, we begin with a SWOT analysis and then move to a Porters Five Forces analysis; finally, we look at an article by Schonfeld that explains eBays strategy  particularly with regard to expansion overseas. The SWOT analysis reveals that eBay has more strengths than weaknesses; in particular, they have become "the" name in auction sites, much as "Xerox"  now stands for all copiers and "Hoover" stands for all vacuum cleaners. It is a concerns ultimate goal to have the name of the company synonymous with the service  that all such companies provide, and eBay has managed that. eBay is also very strong because of the sheer volume of business it does; over 100 million people a year  buy on the site; some 60 million are registered members. This kind of customer base makes eBay immensely powerful. The Porters analysis also reveals a company of surprising strength,  with few competitors and a base of both customers and suppliers who have little power over it; Schonfelds article gives us a glimpse of the strategy that has led to  eBays success as well as a look into the future.
