It is certainly a concern, but most people would be surprised to learn that entering a credit card number on a well known vendors web site is  probably safer than if one were to hand a credit card to a waiter. At the same time, there are peculiar concerns about security in terms of other personal information  besides credit card numbers and consumers do need to know whether or not their information is really safe when participating in an online environment. Some security methods  such as encryption are implemented to secure consumers identity. Still, there is little in the way of government regulation today but there had been many proposals made in recent  years. Senator Fritz Hollings for example had a broad sweeping bill that would requisite much in terms of regulation, but that was rejected. Chile, on the other hand, has  been the first Latin American country to enact a data-protection law and would cover processing and use of personal data rules, as well as the rights of individuals, rules  addressing the use of information by government agencies and the use of financial information ("E-business," 2001). While most American consumers have little legal protection in terms of privacy on  the Internet, many companies do their best to utilize technology so that a consumer is not harmed. Still, unscrupulous individuals pretending to be someone else in order to access material  goods is a growing problem. In fact, more than 150,000 ("Identity," 2002, p.68) consumers in the United States had been victims of identity theft during 2001. The number of cases  is expected to increase to more than 900,000 per year by the year 2006 (2002). In early 2003, the Wall Street Journal reported that the number of such cases had
