    native New England countryside, and took every opportunity to celebrate it in her writings. Jewetts endearing short story, "A White Heron," published in 1886, features a breathtaking rural landscape,  which serves as a touching and powerful metaphor for the journey of the young protagonist, Sylvia, from girlhood into adulthood. Sylvia is a lonely eight-year-old girl whose family lives  in the city. She is a timid child, described by her grandmother Mrs. Tilley as "afraid of folks" (431), and feels out of place everywhere except in the nature  which surrounds her grandmothers modest farm. Although uncomfortable around in the company of others and quite timid, as many girls are,  Sylvia was also quite suspicious of people she doesnt know. She feels most at home in the wild, with only animals for company. With them, she doesnt have  to engage in any conversation; all she has to do is watch and listen. Mrs. Tilley observed, "There aint a foot o ground she dont know her way over,  and the wild creaturs counts her one o themselves. Squerls shell tame to come an feed right out o her hands, and all sorts o birds. Last winter  she got the jay-birds to bangeing here, and I believe shed a scanted herself of her own meals to have plenty to throw out amongst em, if I hadnt kep  watch" (434). During one of her little journeys to lead the willful cow Mistress Moolly back to the farm, Sylvia encountered what appeared to be a friendly young hunter  who had lost his way. He revealed himself to be an ornithologist who was fascinated by the study of birds. He was hoping to go to the Tilley
