II.  REVIEW OF LITERATURE There exists an inherent connection between those who enter the nursing field and their desire to help others. They  discover that the best way to make a difference in someones life is to be there in their most desperate of times. This is why nursing is such a  tremendously rewarding career: just by offering a piece of oneself, an individual can make a lasting impression, while at the same time assisting in a persons recuperation. The perceived  quality of care delivered by nursing staff is of paramount importance to ones performance. One particular aspect of the job that leads to a negative perception is when nurses  feel powerless to help their patients. Their primary objective is to decrease pain and minister lifesaving medications; when one or both of these fail to address the patients illness,  there is a considerable sense of hopelessness that accompanies that failure. It is not uncommon for nurses to become emotionally attached to their patients, only to watch them die  one after another in spite of their good care. "The primary goals for the case management project were to ascertain if case management positively influenced: (a) the process of  patient care, especially the patients ability to handle post-discharge needs, (b) the nurses perceptions of the care they delivered and their work satisfaction" (Lynn et al, 1997, p. 237-241).  A particular theoretical/conceptual model influences ones view of nursing as a discipline and approach to nursing practice.
