the way in which it can retain its position as market leader. The hospitality industry in Hong Kong is thriving, between 2002 and 2006 the number of international visitors to
Hong Kong increased by more than 50%. There has also been a large increase in the number of hotel rooms. Intercontinental is in the upper upscale segment serving mainly business
customers and upmarket leisure travellers. The increase in international travel has helped to stimulate demand for its services. The hotel also faces a high degree of competition from nearby hotels
such as the Peninsula, Grand Hyatt and Mandarin Oriental. These hotels all aim at the same target market, however Intercontinental appears to have the lowest room rates. Intercontinental competes with
the use of differentiation, the presence of new and innovative restaurants and facilities in the hotel rooms satisfy many of the visitors requirements. This puts the hotel in a strong
position. To retain that position the hotel has to continue to innovate, extending differentiation to keep its market lead. There are a number of potential areas where changes or innovations
could be made. This paper suggests several innovations, including the building of helipad on the roof, the creation of limousine services with modern high-tech facilities in the cars and the
changing of the external appearance of the hotel so that it becomes a unique and attractive landmark for Hong Kong. The changes are projected at taking three years, implemented slowly
in order to prevent disruption of hotel operations. The changes suggested will be able to help the hotel retained its position as market leader.
