    opinion of what gender is supposed to reflect; if an individual falls outside the pre-established barriers, then he or she is cast out as a social mutation. Trebilcot helps  the reader understand the deeper assertions of such terms as androgyny, unisex, gender, male and female so that one might begin to realize how there can be no hard and  fast rules when it comes to sex roles. "Androgyny was an attractive concept when the feminist movement was young; but, denying female difference as it did, it soon lost  its appeal...Not only does androgyny focus on individuals rather than social structure, it reproduces--and thereby reifies--the very gender polarization it seeks to undercut" (Wolfe 27). Trebilcot is of the  belief that society should embrace all forms of gender roles, from the standard and typical to the obscure and alternative. Hers is a lesson in tolerance to all things  different without feeling the need to judge, criticize or become fearful of the unknown. With that said, Trebilcot also implies that feminism is to womens survival in a patriarchal  society what sports is to men: the life that breathes through them. To say that women have had to fight for their existence within the literary world would be  a gross understatement. Indeed, the road to self-expression through the written word has been paved with patriarchal intolerance and characteristic skepticism. That women have been forced to prove  their worthiness within the stringent boundaries of a male-dominated existence speaks volumes about the inherent fortitude that comprises the female spirit. The concept  of feminism embodies a number of critical theories by which to better address the various perspectives of interdisciplinary connection.
