    1960s saw the Vietnam War and the 1980s saw subtle international involvement in overseas warfare. The social structure of the country in 1960s was highly volatile and incredibly torn. The  1980s saw a time of confusion and a time where youth searched for something to rebel against, never quite reaching the goal seen in the 1960s. Now, this does not  mean that there were not similarities, for it can perhaps be honestly argued that there are similarities in all decades, to one degree or another. Bearing these realities we present  the following paper which examines the social life of America in the 1960s and then the 1980s. The paper then compares and contrasts the two. In providing this examination we  also incorporate James Carrolls book "An American Requiem" as it involves the various periods in time. 1960s The 1960s was a time of confusion, that much is clear.  It was a period of time when the country was in a state of powerful chaos due to changes at home and changes abroad. America saw the Vietnam War, and  this was an event that was to surely influence the social life of America. One of the most important cultural aspects concerning the Vietnam War is that which involves technology.  Never before had people possessed televisions that brought a war into living rooms. This new technology, previously used only for entertainment and simple news, was now a reality in the  culture of America as it related to the war. Horrid atrocities and conditions were presented to the viewer. Now, today we think little of what we see on the news  on television. It has become such a powerful and common aspect of our world that we are not shocked or easily swayed by what the news tells us. And, compared
