    profit by marketing hardware to the general public. While that is the case, and its strategic plans have worked out well, the dawn of the twenty-first century has altered things  for all firms. No longer are the goals of the seventies or eighties around. Computers have become smarter and the changing technology has to some extent slowed. While things continue  to occur, many people have computers and so it is not the revolution it once was. In other words, few individuals are purchasing their very first computer. The new  state of affairs means that computer programmers are out of work, something unimaginable during the 1970s. While of course keypunch operators would get the boot long before the COBOL  or Fortran programmers would, the dissolution of mainframes was also something unimaginable. Enter the dot coms that evolved in the 1990s and the landscape changes once again. Today, e-commerce is  a mainstay and computer companies utilize this method of sales because it is an idea that makes sense. While many firms shine, Dell has been an industry leader with its  brindle boxes and customization. Although its marketing plans have been well received, and its computer liked particularly due to its low price tag, it is hard to know whether or  not the future will be just as kind to this firm that has done well so far. After all, the economy has taken a turn for the worse, and mergers  and acquisitions in the industry has rendered a new paradigm for the future of computing. In order to evaluate how Dell might fare, it makes sense to look at  where the firm has been. II.
