This 26 page paper considers the way a medical center may develop a strategic plan. Using a major New York hospital and medical facility the paper presents this process in three parts. The first part identifies the organization; the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and the background including the mission and values, structure, management, strategic planning and governance. The second part of the paper undertakes an environmental assessment using the SWOT analysis, which is used to identity potential strategies that build on opportunities and are aligned with the organisational mission and goals. The last part of the paper is a financial projection for the chosen strategy, complete with capital budget and five year projections. wide range of medical services for in and out patients. In common with many other healthcare organizations it faces a wide range of internal and external pressures which require the
organization to maximise its use of resources in providing care for divergent patient needs. The medical center houses a 705 bed hospital as well as many
out patient clinics and services, including provision for outreach care located remotely in different areas in Brooklyn (Maimonides, 2011). The center
has its origins in 1911 with the New Utrecht Dispensary, becoming the United Israel Zion Hospital in 1920 following the absorption of several smaller dispensaries. The hospital continued to grow,
increasing the size of its facilities merging with the Beth Moses Hospitals in 1947 (Maimonides, 2011). The Maimonides name was adopted in 1996;
the facility was named in honor of the Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon. Maimon was a Jewish twelfth century philosopher who made significant contributions towards the modern methods utilized in the
training of doctors (Maimonides, 2011). The hospital, which was originally focused on serving the Orthodox Jewish community, today cares for the ethnically diverse range of patients. In line
with many other medical facilities, the hospital places a great deal of emphasis on its provision of high quality care but is also facing challenges to maximise its use of
