    the latest iPhone or iPod release. Despite the media coverage, however, its uncertain whether Apple Inc. would be an ideal company in which to invest. To best determine that, we  will need a thorough investigation of the company and its prospects for the present and future. The purpose of this research is to  determine if Apple Inc. is, indeed, a healthy company in which to invest, and to cut through the media reports and public relations jargon while doing so. Industry  Analysis - Apples Competition If we try to understand Apples competition, wed probably have to say "it depends." Apple is busy on a  variety fronts. On the one hand, the company is involved in the design, development and marketing of all things personal computer, such as hard drives, related software and network solutions  (Apple Inc. 2009). In this sector, the competition would consist of Dell Computers, Hewlett-Packard and, to an extent, Microsoft Corp. (especially on the software side).  On the other hand, Apple is in the music distribution business with help from its million-song-strong iTunes, onto which people download onto iPods or other musical devices.  The competition here is Rhapsody for music distribution and Microsoft (Zune) and Sony, among others, on the mp3 players. And iPod is active  on the mobile communications front with its iPhone. The competition here would include Sony, Nokia and Motorola. But as well see later  on in conducting a SWOT analysis, Apple has been able to do a good job leveraging its brand name into these various markets, and, as a result, has a nice
