words, measurements and criteria in social science seem to be different than criteria for the pure sciences. That said, medical research is often ambiguous and even pure science has been  contradicted on occasion. Still, social science has had this dilemma since its inception. For example, how does one prove that daycare is bad for children, or that divorce can cause  teenage female offspring to become pregnant. While there is always anecdotal evidence of these things, studies must be done to furnish statistically significant, and meaningful, conclusions. For topics such  as that, there is difficulty. Even when there is a statistically significant conclusion, there are so many variables. Also, in a changing society, how long will such results be meaningful?  However, in some branches of psychology, there are more precise measurements--or at least it seems on the surface--such as the absolute threshold, a measurement related to sensory perception. Measuring  the absolute threshold is difficult to do. After all, how does one go about measuring something that largely goes to perception. The absolute threshold is actually the minimum amount of  either light, or other sensory stimulation, that a human being can detect. For example, dogs can hear whistles that human beings cannot. At what point can a human detect that  particular pitch? The measurement is difficult and one has to wonder whether or not classical psychological methodology is adequate to perform such a task. If not, how can absolute threshold  be measured? First, it pays to look at the absolute threshold and how it is usually measured. An example is useful here. If one supposes that they want to find  out what the weakest intensity of light that can be detected in a dark room is, how might they go about this? To derive the absolute threshold here, it should
